WhatsApp Calls Now Open to Non-Users Without an Account

WhatsApp has introduced a significant update, allowing individuals to join calls even if they do not have a WhatsApp account. This new functionality, detailed in a recent blog post, removes a major barrier for connecting with people who are not actively on the platform.

Users can now join a WhatsApp call simply by clicking a shared link. This link opens the call in a computer web browser, where the guest can type in their name and join after being admitted by the host. The feature supports calls of all sizes, from one-on-one conversations up to groups of 32 people, making it versatile for various uses.

For Indian users, this is a particularly impactful change. WhatsApp is already the default communication app for millions across the country, from family groups to small businesses. The new feature means you can now easily rope in someone who might not be on the platform, perhaps an elderly relative who uses a basic phone, or a client who prefers email for communication and doesn't have WhatsApp installed. It removes the friction of asking someone to download and set up the app just for a single call.

Importantly, WhatsApp confirms that calls initiated via these links remain end-to-end encrypted, maintaining the platform's commitment to user privacy. All participants, including those without an account, retain core features such as the ability to raise their hand and share their screen. WhatsApp also confirmed that these calls remain free and have no time limits, which is a big plus.

To create a call link, a user with a WhatsApp account simply needs to navigate to the 'Calls' tab within the app, select the '+' icon, and then generate a call link. This link can then be shared with anyone they wish to invite. It's crucial to note that only existing WhatsApp account holders can create these links, while anyone can join.

While services like Google Meet and Zoom have long offered account-free call joining, WhatsApp's advantage in India lies in its sheer user base and the widespread trust associated with its communication features. This update brings WhatsApp closer to being a universal calling solution, even for those outside its immediate ecosystem.

Looking ahead, WhatsApp also mentioned that these call links will soon be integrated into popular calendar services like Google Calendar and Outlook using a dedicated plugin. This will further streamline the process for scheduling and inviting participants to calls, especially for professional or educational contexts.
