OnePlus 16 Tipped for Global and India Launch, Despite Earlier Rumours

Good news for OnePlus enthusiasts in India: the company might be preparing a global variant of its latest flagship, the OnePlus 16, which includes an Indian release. This comes as a pleasant surprise after earlier rumors suggested the phone would not launch outside China.

According to tipster Abhishek Yadav on X, OnePlus is currently testing software for a “global/Indian” version of the OnePlus 16. This variant is reportedly in development under three distinct model numbers: CPH2901, CPH2903, and CPH2905.

It's worth noting that OnePlus has yet to officially confirm any international release for the OnePlus 16. So, while this news is exciting, it's best to take this information with a pinch of salt, as Notebookcheck reported.

For context, OnePlus had earlier this year pulled out of major international markets like Europe and North America. However, the brand has remained quite active in India, making the initial rumors of the OnePlus 16 skipping the country particularly disappointing for its loyal user base here.

The OnePlus 16 has already launched in China as the company's newest flagship, succeeding the OnePlus 15. The Chinese variant packs some serious hardware, giving us an idea of what an Indian model might offer.

OnePlus 16 (China Variant) Key Specifications

  • Display: A large 6.78-inch AMOLED panel.
  • Refresh Rate: An adaptive refresh rate that goes up to 165Hz for general use and can hit an impressive 185Hz in supported games. This is one of the highest refresh rates we've seen on a smartphone, promising ultra-smooth visuals.
  • Processor: The phone is powered by the flagship Snapdragon 8 Elite Extreme Gen 6 chipset. On paper, this processor should deliver top-tier performance for everything from demanding games to intensive multitasking.
  • Battery: A massive 9,000mAh battery. If this capacity makes it to the Indian variant, it could easily be one of the longest-lasting flagships on the market, a huge plus for heavy users.

What This Could Mean for Indian Buyers

If the OnePlus 16 does indeed come to India, it would bring a powerful competitor to the premium segment. The Snapdragon 8 Elite Extreme Gen 6 chip is a significant upgrade, and the 9,000mAh battery is truly exceptional. Many users prioritise battery life, and this could be a major selling point.

The high refresh rate display, especially the 185Hz for gaming, would also appeal to mobile gamers in India. Compared to the OnePlus 15, which is currently listed at $773.52 on TradingShenzhen (for context, not an India price), the OnePlus 16 brings substantial upgrades that might justify a premium if it launches here.

Additionally, the tipster also mentioned a potential OnePlus 16R model, with the model number PYP110, which might also be in development. The 'R' series usually offers slightly toned-down specs at a more aggressive price point, potentially catering to an even broader audience in India.

For now, we'll have to wait for an official announcement from OnePlus regarding the global and Indian availability of the OnePlus 16. If this leak holds true, it marks a positive shift for the brand's strategy in key markets like India.
