OnePlus has launched its latest flagship smartphone, the OnePlus 16, in China, bringing with it Qualcomm's new Snapdragon 8 Elite Extreme Gen 6 chipset and a massive 9,000mAh battery. The device starts at CNY 5,999, which converts to around ₹85,846 for the 12GB RAM and 256GB storage variant, according to Smartprix.

However, Indian buyers hoping to get their hands on this top-tier model might be disappointed. Smartprix reports that the regular OnePlus 16 is not expected to reach India, with an India launch looking unlikely. This aligns with past reports and tipster comments suggesting the phone will remain a China exclusive.

OnePlus 16R Expected as India's Flagship

Instead of the OnePlus 16, the OnePlus 16R is tipped to take the top spot in the company's Indian lineup. This model is reportedly undergoing Production Validation Tests (PVT), according to tipster Yogesh Brar, as reported by Smartprix. The OnePlus 16R is expected to feature the Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5 chipset, a slightly less powerful but still flagship-grade processor compared to the 'Extreme' variant in the China model.

Other tipped specifications for the OnePlus 16R include a triple 50MP rear camera setup with a dedicated telephoto lens, a 165Hz display, and a battery larger than 7,500mAh. It's also interesting to note that the same hardware is reportedly being tested under realme branding, suggesting a potential shared platform strategy.

A Look at the China-Exclusive OnePlus 16's Hardware

The OnePlus 16 packs some serious hardware for its China launch. It runs on the 2nm Snapdragon 8 Elite Extreme Gen 6 chipset, paired with LPDDR5X Ultra RAM and UFS 4.1 storage. To keep things cool during intense use, there's a 6,428mm² vapour chamber. For gamers, the phone includes dedicated hardware like the Fengchi Game Core, Super Display Chip P4, E-sports Network Chip G3, and Lingxi Touch Chip T3, along with an 800Hz gyroscope.

The display is a flat 6.78-inch BOE X4 LTPO OLED panel with a 1.5K resolution, offering an impressive refresh rate of up to 185Hz. It also supports a peak brightness of 2,000 nits HBM and 3,840Hz PWM dimming for eye comfort, protected by OPPO Crystal Shield Glass. The bezels are incredibly slim at just 1.15mm.

Photography on the OnePlus 16 is handled by a triple rear camera setup. The main sensor is a 200MP Samsung HPE (1/1.4 inches) with OIS. This is complemented by a 50MP OV50D ultra-wide camera (1/2.88-inch sensor) and a 50MP Sony IMX882 periscope telephoto camera. The telephoto lens supports 3X optical zoom at a 73mm equivalent focal length. For selfies, there's a 50MP Sony JN5 front camera.

One of the most eye-catching features is the massive 9,000mAh battery, supporting 100W wired charging and 50W wireless charging. It even offers 27W reverse wired charging and reverse wireless charging. Other features include bypass charging, an action button, an IR blaster, USB 3.2 Gen 1, Wi-Fi 7, Bluetooth 6.0, NFC, and a 3D ultrasonic fingerprint sensor. The phone also boasts IP66, IP68, IP69, and IP69K ratings for dust and water resistance, running ColorOS 17 based on Android 17.

What This Means for Indian Buyers

Since the OnePlus 16 is unlikely to launch in India, its impressive specifications, particularly the Snapdragon 8 Elite Extreme Gen 6 and 9,000mAh battery, will remain out of reach for Indian consumers. Instead, the focus shifts to the OnePlus 16R, which, based on the tipped specs, still promises a strong flagship experience with a Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5 and a large battery, likely catering more directly to the Indian market's expectations and pricing. Indian buyers should keep an eye out for official announcements regarding the OnePlus 16R's local launch.
