The OnePlus 16 launches today in China, featuring the Snapdragon 8 Elite Extreme Gen 6 chip, 100W SuperVOOC charging, and an IP69K rating. It might arrive in India by early 2027.
OnePlus is officially launching its latest flagship, the OnePlus 16, in China today, October 12th, at 7:00 PM local time (4:30 PM IST). Ahead of the official announcement, the company has confirmed several key specifications for the device, as reported by 91Mobiles. This launch confirms OnePlus's continued focus on the premium smartphone segment, even as it has explored budget options recently.
For Indian buyers eyeing a new high-end smartphone, the OnePlus 16 could be a contender, with its potential India debut tipped for December 2026 or January 2027.
Power-packed Hardware and Display
The OnePlus 16 is set to deliver serious performance, powered by the Qualcomm Snapdragon 8 Elite Extreme Gen 6 chipset. It's paired with up to a 16GB RAM and a massive 1TB storage configuration, ensuring plenty of headroom for apps and files. The display is also pushing boundaries with an impressive 185Hz refresh rate, promising extremely fluid visuals. On the software front, it will run ColorOS 17.
For optics, the phone packs a formidable camera setup. You'll find a triple rear camera system with a 200MP main sensor, flanked by two 50MP sensors. Selfies and video calls are handled by a 50MP front camera.
Charging Capabilities and Durability
The OnePlus 16 will feature 100W SuperVOOC wired charging, which is a slight step down from the 120W charging seen on its predecessor, the OnePlus 15. While the reasons for this change aren't clear, it could mean longer charging times for its rumoured 9,000mAh battery, which would be the largest ever on a OnePlus flagship. For wireless convenience, the phone also supports 50W SuperVOOC wireless charging.
Durability is another highlight, with the OnePlus 16 sporting an IP69K rating. This means it's not just protected against dust and water, but also against high-pressure and high-temperature jets, making it quite robust.
Connectivity and Other Features
Connectivity options include tri-frequency GPS and quad-frequency BeiDou satellite positioning, which should offer very accurate location tracking. The Type-C port supports USB 3.2 Gen 1, though this is a downgrade from the OnePlus 15's USB4 in terms of data transfer speeds.
Other notable features include support for the n79 high-frequency band, dual stereo speakers tuned by Master, and a 3D ultrasonic fingerprint sensor for secure unlocking. The haptic feedback should also see an improvement thanks to a new high-performance X-axis linear motor. Plus, the display will be protected by Oppo's Crystal Shield Glass.
Design and Colour Options
Based on initial reports, the OnePlus 16's design looks largely similar to its predecessor. However, at least one of the three available colour variants will stand out with LED lights on the back. These lights will be functional, indicating incoming calls, notifications, music playback, charging status, and even in-game alerts. The phone will be available in Tomorrow’s Starlight, Dark Forest, and Mars Masterpiece finishes.
What This Means for Indian Buyers
The OnePlus 16, on paper, certainly looks like a strong contender in the flagship segment. While it brings powerful new hardware like the Snapdragon 8 Elite Extreme Gen 6, the reported cutbacks in wired charging speed and USB data transfer type suggest OnePlus might be implementing some cost-cutting measures. This could be in response to the rising smartphone prices due to component shortages, as 91Mobiles points out.
The iQOO 16, a potential rival, has already launched in China with a starting price of roughly Rs 86,000. If the OnePlus 16 can offer a competitive price point when it potentially launches in India by December 2026 or January 2027, it could be a compelling option. If you're looking for a power-packed smartphone, the OnePlus 16 could definitely be worth waiting for.
