Meta has announced its powerful Muse Spark Open AI model can now run on Apple's Mac Studio. This requires a specific, high-end setup of two 512GB M5 Ultra Mac Studios, signaling a significant but costly step for on-device AI.
Meta has announced its new Muse Spark Open AI model, touted as the "most capable U.S. open-weight model to date," can now run on Apple's Mac Studio desktops. This collaboration between Meta and Apple allows the massive AI model to operate directly on a desktop setup, a notable development in on-device AI capabilities.
The Muse Spark Open model is a substantial piece of AI, featuring 816 billion total parameters with 42 billion active parameters and an impressive 1 million-token context window. Meta designed it specifically for coding and agentic work, claiming it excels at complex tasks such as extended reasoning, multi-step problem solving, and software engineering.
To run this powerful model, users will need a very specific and high-end configuration: two 512GB Apple M5 Ultra Mac Studios, operating with the latest MLX framework. Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg publicly thanked Apple CEO John Ternus for their collaboration, with Ternus also highlighting the Mac Studio's role in pushing "boundaries of on-device AI" via a post on X (formerly Twitter).
The Mac Studio Requirement and Cost Implications
Meta attributes the Mac Studio's suitability to Apple's unified memory architecture. This allows the M5 Ultra's integrated GPU to utilise up to 512GB of memory per Mac Studio, meaning two machines can effectively house the entire model. The chip's 1.2 TB/s memory bandwidth is also key, providing the speed needed for processing.
However, this level of performance comes with a significant price tag. Apple has not yet released the 512GB Mac Studio, though it is "supposed to be coming later this month," according to MacRumors. The current 256GB Mac Studio already sells for over $10,000 (roughly ₹8.3 lakh, excluding taxes and import duties, based on current exchange rates). For Indian AI developers or enterprises considering this setup, two 512GB M5 Ultra Mac Studios would represent an extremely substantial investment, likely pushing well over ₹15-20 lakh.
This positions the Muse Spark Open on Mac Studio as a niche solution for those with deep pockets and specific, demanding AI development needs, rather than a mainstream option for local consumers or small businesses. While running such a powerful model on a desktop is impressive, the barrier to entry remains very high for most in India.
An Unlikely Partnership and Accessibility
The collaboration between Apple and Meta is particularly noteworthy given their historically competitive relationship. Meta's AI chief Alexandr Wang even quipped to Axios, "We're excited for mommy and daddy to be playing nice again." This partnership underscores the growing importance of AI and the need for powerful hardware to support its development.
Despite the high hardware cost, the Muse Spark Open model itself is free to download, and its license permits limited commercial use. It is also available through various API platforms including Baseten, Fireworks AI, Groq, Modal, Nebius, OpenRouter, and Together AI. Model weights can be downloaded from Amazon SageMaker AI, Google Cloud Model Garden, Hugging Face, and Microsoft Foundry Models.
For Indian professionals in AI research or software engineering who require a powerful, open-weight model for extensive on-device agentic work, and who have the budget for a top-tier Mac Studio setup, Meta's Muse Spark Open offers a compelling, albeit expensive, new option.
