iPhone 20 Pro tipped to ditch Dynamic Island for punch-hole screen in 2027

Apple's 2027 iPhone lineup, potentially the iPhone 20 Pro models, is reportedly being tested with a punch-hole display. This could replace the Dynamic Island, bringing a near bezel-less screen with curved edges.

Apple's 2027 iPhone lineup, potentially called the iPhone 20, is reportedly planning a major display redesign for its Pro models, according to a new leak reported by Digit. Tipster Digital Chat Station claims the iPhone 20 Pro and Pro Max are being tested with a punch-hole screen, which would mean saying goodbye to the Dynamic Island.

Larger Displays for iPhone 20 Pro Models

The leak suggests the smaller iPhone 20 Pro could feature a 6.41-inch display with a resolution of 2,686 x 1,236 pixels. Its larger sibling, the iPhone 20 Pro Max, is tipped to get a 6.96-inch screen at 2,912 x 1,340 pixels.

For context, the iPhone 18 Pro has a 6.3-inch display with a 2,622 x 1,206 resolution, and the iPhone 18 Pro Max comes with a 6.9-inch panel at 2,868 x 1,320 pixels. So, based on the leak, the reported iPhone 20 Pro panels would be slightly larger while retaining a similar pixel density compared to the iPhone 18 Pro series.

Punch-Hole Display and Curved Edges Tipped

The more significant aspect of this leak is the suggested display design. Digital Chat Station indicates these test panels have a borderless appearance, with curvature extending across all four edges. A punch-hole cutout is also said to be part of this design.

If this rumour holds true, it represents a substantial change from the Dynamic Island that's currently on Apple's Pro iPhones. What remains unclear, however, is whether this punch-hole would only house the front camera, or if Apple has a new method planned for Face ID.

A 20th Anniversary Redesign for iPhone

This reported redesign is expected to coincide with Apple's 2027 iPhone lineup. That year marks two decades since the original iPhone launched in 2007, and Apple is widely anticipated to use this anniversary for a more significant design overhaul.

Earlier reports have also pointed to Apple working with Samsung on four-sided curved OLED panels. This includes designs that could reduce or even eliminate the need for a polariser layer. Apple and its display suppliers have also reportedly been addressing brightness and other visual challenges around curved edges of displays.

While some earlier reports have referred to the 2027 models as the iPhone 19, others suggest Apple might use a different name entirely for its 20th-anniversary device. These are, of course, very early leaks and are yet to be confirmed by Apple.

What This Means for Indian Buyers

For Indian buyers, considering a phone expected in 2027 means a long wait. If you are planning an upgrade in the next year or two, these reported changes are too far out to directly influence your decision for, say, an iPhone 19 or 20. However, if you are someone who holds onto their iPhone for many years, and the idea of a truly bezel-less, punch-hole display with curved edges is appealing, then this leak offers a glimpse into a future with a significantly different design. Remember, though, these are still early rumours, and Apple's plans can always evolve.

We will have to wait for more concrete details as 2027 approaches, but a redesigned iPhone Pro line without the Dynamic Island could certainly shake things up for future buyers.
