WhatsApp for iPhone May Soon Get Full In-App Browser, WABetaInfo Tips

WhatsApp is reportedly developing an expanded in-app browser feature for iPhone users, which could soon allow them to open any link shared in chats directly within the app. This news comes from WABetaInfo, a reliable source for WhatsApp developments, which uncovered references to the feature in the latest TestFlight build.

Currently, WhatsApp already offers limited in-app browser support, but only for specific business links. This was introduced last year, allowing users to view certain HTTPS-secured business sites without leaving the app, though they still had the option to open these links in their default browser.

How the New In-App Browser Could Work

According to WABetaInfo's findings, the upcoming feature will extend this capability to all links shared within WhatsApp conversations. Users will find a new "In-app browser" option tucked away under Settings > Chats. This setting will let them choose whether links open directly inside WhatsApp or in their preferred default browser like Safari or Chrome.

When a user enables this feature for the first time, WhatsApp will display a bottom sheet explaining how it works. It will clearly state that any link sent or received in a chat can now be opened within WhatsApp, and users can always revert to their default browser at any point.

Privacy and Data Control

One notable aspect of this upcoming feature is the emphasis on user privacy. The same settings screen will also provide an option to clear cookies, cache, and other browsing data accumulated by WhatsApp's in-app browser. Crucially, the report highlights that "WhatsApp cannot see links shared in the conversation and which ones users open." This is a significant detail, assuring users that their browsing activity within the app remains private from WhatsApp itself.

What This Means for Indian iPhone Users

For iPhone users in India, this could be a convenient addition. Many users appreciate the ability to stay within an app rather than being redirected to an external browser, which can save time and mobile data switching between applications. Having the choice to open any link in-app means a smoother flow for quickly checking articles, product pages, or videos without jumping out of their chat.

The added privacy controls, allowing users to clear browsing data and WhatsApp explicitly stating it won't track links, are definitely a positive. It gives users more agency over their digital footprint, which is always welcome.

Availability Not Yet Confirmed

As is typical with features discovered in WhatsApp's TestFlight builds, there's currently no official word on when this expanded in-app browser will be rolled out to beta testers or the general public. While WABetaInfo has provided screenshots and details, the timeline for its release remains unconfirmed. Users will need to wait for further announcements from WhatsApp.
