Airtel Introduces New Voice-Only Prepaid Plans Under TRAI Framework

Bharti Airtel has become the first telecom operator in India to launch new shorter-validity voice-and-SMS-only prepaid plans, following the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI)'s new framework. These plans, priced at Rs 185, Rs 203, and Rs 206, are designed for Indian consumers who primarily rely on calling and messaging and do not need bundled mobile data.

As reported by TelecomTalk, these new offerings are now visible on both the Airtel app and its website. They aim to cater to feature phone users, those maintaining a secondary connection just for calls, or individuals who largely use Wi-Fi for internet access, allowing them to avoid paying for data benefits they might not use.

Airtel's New Voice-Only Plans: What They Offer

All three plans come with unlimited local, STD, and roaming calls across India. Subscribers also get a total of 300 SMS messages. A notable inclusion is free HelloTunes, letting customers set one tune every 30 days without extra charges.

The main differentiator among these new plans is their validity period:

  • Rs 185 Plan: This is the most affordable option, providing 28 days of validity. It offers the core calling and SMS benefits for a shorter cycle.
  • Rs 203 Plan: For Rs 18 more, this plan extends the validity to a fixed 30 days, retaining the same unlimited calls and 300 SMS. It suits users who prefer a consistent monthly recharge.
  • Rs 206 Plan: This option comes with one-month validity, which is distinct from the fixed 30-day period. It provides another flexible choice for recharge schedules.

Crucially, none of these plans include any bundled mobile data. This focus means users are only paying for the communication services they truly need.

Why These Plans Matter for Indian Users

The introduction of these plans significantly expands Airtel’s prepaid portfolio, particularly for those whose primary need is voice communication. For many Indian users, especially those in rural areas or with older feature phones, bundled data often goes unused, making data-inclusive plans an inefficient choice.

These shorter-validity plans also mean customers can opt for smaller recharge commitments. Instead of paying upfront for longer-duration packs that might include unwanted data, they now have more granular control over their telecom expenses and usage patterns. This caters to a diverse range of consumers and offers greater flexibility in managing their mobile connectivity.

This move by Airtel aligns with TRAI's requirement for telecom operators to broaden their voice-and-SMS-only options. The regulator had pushed for appropriate reductions in tariffs and the introduction of corresponding shorter-validity packs, including monthly renewal choices and at least one longer-validity offering. Airtel's new lineup directly addresses these directives.

Ultimately, these plans are a welcome addition for price-sensitive consumers and those with specific communication needs, ensuring they pay for what they actually use.
