Google's Universal Cart Launches in U.S., Not Yet in India

Google has rolled out its Universal Cart feature in the U.S., allowing users to consolidate shopping from multiple retailers into one place. While this intelligent tool is currently exclusive to the American market, its capabilities could greatly streamline online purchases if it ever arrives in India.

Google's Universal Cart Launches in U.S., Not Yet in India

Google has officially launched its Universal Cart feature in the United States today, integrating it across Google Search and the Gemini app. This new tool aims to simplify online shopping by letting users save items from various retailers into a single cart, helping manage purchases more efficiently.

What Google's Universal Cart Does

The Universal Cart is designed to be a central hub for your online shopping. According to Google Blog, it organizes products from multiple stores into one consolidated cart, moving beyond the traditional method of keeping numerous tabs open or taking screenshots.

One of its standout features is intelligent price tracking. Built on Google’s Shopping Graph, which includes over 60 billion continually refreshed product listings, the cart proactively monitors items for price drops or when they come back in stock. It then sends notifications to the user, potentially saving money on purchases.

The cart also helps identify relevant promo codes and suggests the best payment methods. Leveraging Google Wallet, it can understand specific credit card perks and help users choose an optimal payment option. This means finding hidden savings or points becomes easier, right from the cart itself.

When it's time to buy, the Universal Cart offers seamless checkout options. Users can complete purchases securely with Google Pay directly within the cart or transfer items to the merchant’s site to finish the order. Google states that merchants like Nike, Sephora, Target, Ulta Beauty, Walmart, Wayfair, and many Shopify merchants already support this simplified checkout experience in the U.S.

Implications for Indian Shoppers

As of now, Google’s Universal Cart is rolling out only in the U.S. This means Indian consumers won't be able to use this feature to consolidate their online shopping across platforms like Amazon India or Flipkart just yet.

However, the concept itself is highly relevant for the Indian market. Many of us juggle multiple shopping apps and websites, especially during festive sales like Diwali or Big Billion Days. A tool that could bring items from different sellers into one place, track prices, and suggest local bank offers or promo codes, would be incredibly useful. On paper, it addresses a common frustration of modern online shopping.

While Google hasn't confirmed any plans for an India launch, the global nature of its services suggests it could eventually make its way here. If it does, the key will be its ability to integrate with India-specific retailers and payment gateways, much like it has with major U.S. merchants and Google Pay there.

For now, Indian buyers will need to wait for an official announcement regarding any potential expansion. Until then, we'll continue managing our shopping lists the old-fashioned way.
