Google has started rolling out Personal Intelligence for Gemini in Android Auto, allowing it to access your Gmail and Google Calendar with permission. This update brings personalised assistance for navigation and flight details to eligible users, including those in India.
Google has begun rolling out its Personal Intelligence feature for Gemini directly within Android Auto, starting October 20. This significant update means that, with your permission, the in-car AI assistant can now tap into your Gmail, Google Calendar, Google Photos, Maps, YouTube, and Search history to provide more personalised answers.
This is good news for Indian users, as the rollout covers eligible personal accounts for users aged 18 and older, and explicitly excludes only the European Economic Area, Switzerland, the United Kingdom, and Nigeria, according to Notebookcheck's report based on Google's announcement.
What Personal Intelligence in Android Auto Does
The core idea is to make your in-car assistant more helpful by understanding your personal context. For example, Google states that on the way to the airport, you could ask Gemini for your flight gate and status. The assistant would then find the confirmation email in your Gmail and provide both answers at once.
Similarly, if you have a doctor's appointment, asking Gemini to navigate there would pull the address directly from your Google Calendar. Other suggested uses include finding a car wash from a photo you took recently or suggesting restaurants along your route based on your past preferences.
How to Enable and Privacy Considerations
You need to activate Personal Intelligence in your Gemini settings. From there, you can pick which Google services you want to connect. If you've already turned on Personal Intelligence in the Gemini app on your phone, it will automatically carry over to Android Auto once the feature rolls out to your account.
Google has stated that no apps are connected until you explicitly turn the feature on, and you can switch it off at any time. When Google first launched Personal Intelligence in January, it clarified that Gemini "doesn't train directly on your Gmail inbox or Google Photos library." Instead, Google trains on limited information, such as your prompts in Gemini and the model's responses. Navigation, music, calls, and general questions in Android Auto will continue to work without Personal Intelligence, but the answers won't be tailored to you.
Availability in Google Built-in Cars and Exclusions
For cars that come with Google built-in, the personalised answers will follow "in the coming months," as per Google's announcement. In these vehicles, Google says personalised answers only appear when you are in the car with your phone connected. It's important to note that Workspace business, enterprise, and education accounts are not eligible for this feature.
While Gemini itself works in Android Auto in Europe, the Personal Intelligence feature, which connects to your Google apps, is currently skipped for the region. Google hasn't provided a specific reason for this exclusion. The Personal Intelligence overview page for the Gemini app also lists the same regional exclusions, where the feature is still described as a beta for personal accounts.
